I. An Analysis of Reparations, the Black Panther Party, and Why We Matter
This paper was assigned to me in my English 075 course last semester. The assignment was compare the modern day Black Lives Matter Movement with the Black Panther Party of the late 1960s as well as the call for reparations by award winning author, Ta-Nehisi Cooates. I chose to revise this essay because it was once that I felt was a challenge to write. To compare three complex topics such as these in a single paper was a large task. My main critic was that I needed to main points were too and I needed to provide more specific examples to support them. When revising this essay, I addressed these issues by identifying the main point I was aiming to prove in each paragraph. Once I ad don this, I considered more effective ways to support it. I feel that writing and revising this paper has strengthened my writing skills by making me consider a large deal of information and developing a clear set of points that I effectively proved.
II. An Analysis of David Walker's Appeal
This paper was assigned to me in my African- American Literature course earlier this semester. I was instructed to choose a text that we have covered and provide an analysis on it. I included this paper in my portfolio because it was one that I did well on. I feel that because this was a good paper, I will be truly challenged to make it better. My main critique for this paper was that I did not focus in on the points that I was attempting to make and that led to their lack of development. In revising this paper, I assessed each paragraph to identify my main point. It appeared to me as though all the information was there, I need to simple “connect the dots.” I also took out some of the quotation and paraphrased them to insure that they pointed to the idea I desired to make. Writing and revising this essay bettered my writing by giving me a change to identify what aspects of my writing process are effective and which aspects could be enhanced.
III. An Analysis of the Souls of Black Folks
This paper was assigned to me again, in my African American Literature course. I was instructed to choose a text that we had covered thus far in the class and to provide an analysis on it. I selected this piece to be the third and final essay because I believe it show the measureable growth that I have undertaken as a writer this semester. Throughout the process for keeping this portfolio, I was asked to revise each essay and then reflect on the improvements I made. By doing this, my writing has been strengthened so that I am not repeating the same mistakes in each paper. This was the First paper that I received an A on before revising it and I believe it was because I was able to sacrament many of the mistake I usually mak. All of the revisions that I made were small type edits.
