“Self-reflection is a humbling process. It’s essential to find out why you think, say, and do certain things… Then better yourself.  This epigram by Sonya Teclai closely relates to my thoughts on keeping a portfolio of my writing this semester. Despite the challenges that may arise, I am eager to collect my works throughout this semester and reflect on them as I believe I will not only become a stronger writer in the process, but also a more effective thinker.

Unlike many of my peers, this will be my first time creating a portfolio as I was enrolled in 075 and not 104 last semester. I am aware that this puts me at a slight disadvantage, but it also sets me up for a great opportunity to learn something new. In doing the readings to prepare for class this week, a few ideas stuck out at me from Portfolio Keeping. This portfolio is not a “scrapbook.” It should not simply include my best or favorite pieces. The purpose of this portfolio aid me in the process of “reflective learning.” As I collect my works throughout the semester, I will be able to see my development and progression as a writer. To this point, it follows that this is the reason the portfolio includes rough drafts as well as final copies of each work. In seeing both versions and reflecting on the process I followed to arrive at the final copy, I will be able to see how I can make be more effective in the writing process.

This semester, I will challenge myself to use this opportunity to strengthen my writing and critical thinking skills. It is my hope that even after keeping this portfolio this semester, I will continue to reflect on my writing and to continue growing.

“What are your initial thought on keeping a portfolio of your writing?”
